Day 1 — Royal Seoul

Day 1 — Royal Seoul

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Historic Site, Palace
Gyeongbokgung is the main palace for a first visit. Spend the morning among its gates, throne hall and courtyards, then continue to the Folk Museum. It normally closes on Tuesdays; use the Hongdae day instead.

Museum, Museum Gallery
The galleries beside Gyeongbokgung explain everyday Korean life, from family rituals to farming. A focused hour works well after the palace, before lunch around Samcheong-dong.

Bukchon Hanok Village

Attraction, Core Attraction
Walk the lanes between traditional hanok houses after lunch. This is a residential neighbourhood: the marked red zone admits tourists from 10am to 5pm, so keep this an afternoon visit and voices low.
Image of Insadong

Insadong

Quarter, Core Attraction
Insadong is a good end to the palace day, with craft shops, galleries and tea houses along its main street and side lanes. Stay for a Korean dinner around Insadong or nearby Ikseon-dong.

Day 2 — Historic Centre & Markets

Day 2 — Historic Centre & Markets

Changdeokgung Palace

Historic Site
Changdeokgung opens Day 2 with a different palace setting: halls tucked into wooded grounds. The Secret Garden needs a separate timed tour reservation. The palace normally closes on Mondays.

Jongmyo Shrine

Historic Site
This royal ancestral shrine is a quieter counterpart to Changdeokgung. Walk its ceremonial courtyards, then head east towards Gwangjang Market for lunch.

Gwangjang Market

Marketplace, Market Shopping
Make this the lunch stop: mung-bean pancakes, small gimbap rolls and noodle stalls are easy ways to sample the market. Eat at a stall before continuing towards Dongdaemun.

Heunginjimun Gate (Dongdaemun)

Fort, History Landmark
Heunginjimun, usually called Dongdaemun, is one of the surviving city gates. View it from the surrounding pavement, then walk south to the Design Plaza; this is a short outdoor stop.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza

Public, Core Attraction
Walk around the sweeping metal building and plazas after the old city gate. The architecture is the main draw; choose an exhibition if you want a longer indoor visit.

Cheonggyecheon Stream

Attraction, Core Attraction
End the afternoon beside the restored stream. Join the path for a short stretch around Dongdaemun and Gwangjang, following the water back towards the centre.

Day 3 — Namsan & Myeongdong

Day 3 — Namsan & Myeongdong

Namdaemun Market

Marketplace, Market Shopping
Start with breakfast or an early lunch among the market lanes. Kalguksu noodles and hotteok pancakes make good stops; the clothing and kitchenware stalls show a more workaday Seoul than the palace districts.

Namsan Park

Park
Namsan Park supplies the walking part of the day. Follow the uphill paths towards the tower for views over central Seoul; take the cable car if you prefer to save the climb for another day.

Historic Site
The hilltop already has broad city views; the paid observatory is optional. Stay into the evening, then head down towards Myeongdong for shopping streets and dinner.

Day 4 — Hongdae & Yeonnam

Gyeongui Line Forest Park

Park, Park Nature
Follow the converted railway strip through Yeonnam, stopping for coffee and a browse in the side streets. Continue towards Hongik University for Hongdae’s shops and music venues, then take the metro to Mangwon for lunch.

Yeonnam-dong

Quarter, Core Attraction
Browse Yeonnam’s small shops and cafés in the late morning, using the former railway park as a walking spine. Stop for coffee before heading towards Hongdae and Mangwon.

Mangwon Market

Marketplace, Market Shopping
Come here for lunch after Yeonnam: snack stalls and groceries sit among everyday local shopping. Carry picnic food towards the Han River, then return to Hongdae for dinner and the evening music scene.

Experience · Seoul
Turn the Mangwon Market visit into a 3½-hour cooking outing: shop with your host, then prepare and eat a Korean meal in a local home. It replaces the independent market stop on Day 4, leaving Yeonnam and the railway park for a walk afterwards.

Day 5 — Gangnam & Olympic Park

Day 5 — Gangnam & Olympic Park

Bongeunsa Temple

Historic Site
Begin Gangnam with the temple courtyards and the large standing Buddha. Its hillside setting gives a useful contrast to the towers around COEX; the library is just across the road.

Starfield Library

Library
This open library inside COEX is a short architectural stop, with tall shelves around a public reading space. Pair it with Bongeunsa and lunch in the complex before taking the metro towards Olympic Park.

Olympic Park

Amusement Park
Spend the afternoon walking between the Peace Gate, sculpture lawns and lakes in Seoul’s 1988 Olympic Park. Choose a loop and a café stop before returning for dinner.

Museum, History Museum
Optional half-day indoors, with sculpture, ceramics and galleries tracing Korean history. Replace the Gangnam morning or part of the market day if you want more museum time; the grounds also make a pleasant walk.
Image of Lotte World Tower

Lotte World Tower

Commercial, Core Attraction
Optional alternative to the Namsan observatory: Seoul Sky gives a much higher view from the eastern side of the city. Pair it with Seokchon Lake, replacing part of the Olympic Park afternoon.
