Day 1 — Government Quarter & Mitte

Day 1 — Government Quarter & Mitte
Image of Brandenburg Gate

Brandenburg Gate

Historic Site
Begin at Brandenburg Gate, where the former border ran just behind the columns. Walk through Pariser Platz, then head north to the Reichstag, around five minutes away. This first stretch is all outdoors. Unter den Linden runs east from the gate and is useful for finding breakfast before the more substantial visits.

Reichstag Building

Landmark, Government
The parliament building is a short walk from Brandenburg Gate. Its glass dome gives views over the government quarter, but visits require advance registration with the Bundestag; book a slot before the trip. Without a booking, the exterior still belongs on this walk. Return south towards the Holocaust Memorial afterwards.

Monument
Walk between the concrete stelae, where the ground drops and the rows gradually become taller. This is a memorial, so approach it quietly. The underground information centre provides individual stories and historical context. From the southern edge, it is roughly fifteen minutes on foot to Topography of Terror.

Topography of Terror

Museum, History Museum
Spend the afternoon with the exhibition on the Gestapo and SS headquarters that operated on this site. The photographs and documents deserve a slower read; roughly ninety minutes suits a first visit. Outside, a surviving section of the Berlin Wall runs along Niederkirchnerstrasse. Admission is free. Potsdamer Platz is nearby for onward transport or dinner.

Day 2 — Museum Island & Hackescher Markt

Neues Museum

Museum, Museum Gallery
Give this morning to the Neues Museum’s Egyptian and archaeological collections, including the bust of Nefertiti. The restored building is part of the visit: older walls and modern repairs remain visible together. Book a timed museum ticket and spend around two hours inside. Afterwards, walk south through Museum Island towards the Lustgarten.

Park
Pause on the lawn between the Altes Museum and Berlin Cathedral after the Neues Museum. The cathedral’s dome frames this open space, while the river paths show Museum Island from the side. This is a short outdoor break before the cathedral visit; lunch follows across the river around Hackescher Markt.

Berlin Cathedral

Historic Site
Berlin Cathedral, or Berliner Dom, adds a different kind of interior to Museum Island: mosaics, the large organ and the space beneath the dome. Spend about an hour inside; the dome walkway adds a climb of 270 steps and views along the Spree. On Sundays, sightseeing starts at noon. Head to Hackescher Markt for lunch afterwards.

Attraction, Core Attraction
Explore the linked courtyards just off Rosenthaler Straße, looking at the tiled façades and small shops as you pass between them. This is a good afternoon after the museum: about forty-five minutes for the courtyards, then coffee or dinner around Hackescher Markt. Nearby Rosenthaler Straße and Oranienburger Straße make an easy extension on foot.

Day 3 — Berlin Wall & East Side

Day 3 — Berlin Wall & East Side

Berlin Wall Memorial Documentation Center

Historic Site
Begin on Bernauer Straße, where preserved border installations show how the Wall cut through a residential neighbourhood. Read the outdoor panels, then use the documentation centre and viewing platform for context. The centre closes on Mondays; the outdoor memorial remains accessible. After lunch, take public transport towards Ostbahnhof for the East Side Gallery, rather than walking across the city.

East Side Gallery

Historic Site
Walk the painted stretch of Wall beside the Spree from the Ostbahnhof end towards Oberbaum Bridge. The murals turn the former border into a record of the years around reunification. Around an hour gives you a useful first look without rushing along the entire stretch. The riverside side is a good place for a pause before the bridge.
Image of Oberbaumbrücke

Oberbaumbrücke

Historic Site
Finish the Wall walk at this red-brick bridge between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. Walk across for views of the Spree and the East Side Gallery behind you. The streets around Schlesische Straße on the Kreuzberg side are a good direction for dinner. Warschauer Straße and Schlesisches Tor provide public transport back to the centre.

DDR Museum

Museum, History Museum
Choose this instead of the Neues Museum on Day 2 if everyday life in East Germany interests you more than ancient history. The recreated flat, Trabant driving simulation and objects you can handle make the subject tangible. Spend around ninety minutes here beside the Spree, opposite the cathedral, then rejoin the walk towards Hackescher Markt.
Image of Berlin Television Tower

Berlin Television Tower

Historic Site
For a city-wide view, replace the cathedral’s dome climb with the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz on Day 2. The observation deck is reached by lift, and the view brings the distances between Berlin’s neighbourhoods into focus. Book a timed ticket; roughly an hour suits the visit. Museum Island is about fifteen minutes away on foot.

Gendarmenmarkt Berlin

Public Plaza
Add this square after Topography of Terror on Day 1 for a short architecture walk. The Konzerthaus stands between the domed German and French cathedral buildings; the façades are the reason to come, so an interior ticket is unnecessary for this stop. Spend twenty to thirty minutes here, then find dinner around nearby Friedrichstraße.
