Sapporo makes a practical base for a first snowy Hokkaido trip. Spend five days on city sights, warming local food and winter activities, with a day in Otaru and a festival option for an early-February visit.

Day 1 — Central Sapporo
Day 1 — Central Sapporo
Sapporo
Nijo Market
Marketplace, Market Shopping
Start with a seafood breakfast or an early lunch before the stalls quieten down. The compact market is a useful first stop, with covered shopping streets nearby when you want a break from the snow.
Sapporo Clock Tower
Historic Site
Step inside the former drill hall for the story of Sapporo Agricultural College, or make a short stop outside for the landmark clock face. It fits neatly between the market and Odori.
Sapporo TV Tower
Historic Site
Go up for a view along Odori Park and across the city grid. If you prefer to buy just one viewpoint ticket, save it for Mount Moiwa on a clear evening.
Ōdōri Park
Park, Park Nature
Walk a few blocks through the centre of the city. In early February, the Snow Festival adds its large snow sculptures; outside festival dates this remains a winter park walk, not a sculpture display.
Tanukikoji Shopping Street
Mall, Market Shopping
Finish under the covered arcade, with shops and plenty of places to eat. Try miso ramen or soup curry around the city centre; neither needs a special restaurant detour built into the route.
Day 2 — Maruyama & Hokkaido Shrine
Day 2 — Maruyama & Hokkaido Shrine
Sapporo
Maruyama Park
Park
Use the snowy park paths to approach Hokkaido Shrine. Keep to the lower park for this visit; climbing Maruyama is a separate winter hike.
Hokkaido Jingu Shrine
Historic Site
Visit the shrine among the trees, with the snow adding to the setting. Early January brings busy New Year visits; the rest of the winter is generally a quieter time to explore.
Maruyama Zoo
Zoo
Make the zoo the main daytime visit after the shrine. The mix of outdoor enclosures and indoor animal houses suits a winter outing, though you will still spend plenty of time outside.
Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art
Museum, Modern Art Museum
Warm up with regional art and the museum’s changing exhibitions after Maruyama. It is a substantial indoor alternative if you would rather shorten the zoo visit.
Sapporo Fushimi Inari shrine
Place of Worship, History Landmark
The red torii gates make a distinctive final stop on the west side of the city. This is a separate bus or taxi hop from the art museum, so skip it if you prefer a longer afternoon in the galleries.
Day 3 — Brewery history & university
Day 3 — Brewery history & university
Sapporo
Sapporo Beer Museum
Museum
Start with the history of one of Japan’s best-known breweries. The basic exhibition and paid tastings are different parts of the visit; a guided tour is an optional upgrade.
Sapporo Beer Garden
Restaurant, Restaurant
Stay on the brewery grounds for lunch if you want to try jingisukan, Hokkaido’s grilled lamb dish. The beer halls are restaurants, so this stop is for a meal rather than another museum.
Sapporo Factory
Mall, Market Shopping
The former brewery buildings now house a shopping complex and large indoor atrium. Use it for a warm break before heading to the university area.
Hokkaido University Museum
Museum
Hokkaido University Museum is the afternoon’s main indoor stop, with natural-history specimens and displays about university research. It is on the working university campus, north of Sapporo Station.
Hokkaido University Ginkgo Avenue
Attraction, Core Attraction
Ginkgo Avenue is a short campus walk beside rows of mature trees. Their famous yellow leaves belong to autumn; in winter, come for the snowy avenue rather than foliage.
Day 4 — Otaru Day Trip
Day 4 — Otaru Day Trip
Otaru
Sankaku market
Seafood, Shop Retail
Take the train to Otaru and start at this small covered seafood market beside the station. A seafood bowl makes a good early lunch before walking downhill towards the canal.
Otaru Canal
Attraction, Core Attraction
Walk along the old warehouse waterfront, then continue into the historic shopping streets. The canal is worth seeing in ordinary winter conditions; candlelit Snow Light Path displays belong to the separate February event.
Otaru Music Box Museum
Museum
Browse the music boxes in the historic brick building at the southern end of Sakaimachi. Much of the experience is a shop display, so expect browsing and demonstrations rather than a conventional museum visit.
Kitaichi Glass No. 3 Building
Gift, Shop Retail
Kitaichi Glass No. 3 Building combines glassware shops with a lamp-lit café in an old warehouse. It is an easy stop near the Music Box Museum, with time to browse the surrounding Sakaimachi shops.
Otaru Art Base
Museum, Art Museum
Use the later afternoon for art in Otaru’s former bank and warehouse buildings. Choose the collections that interest you most, then walk back towards the station for the train to Sapporo.
Day 5 — Chocolate, parks & city views
Day 5 — Chocolate, parks & city views
Sapporo
Shiroi Koibito Park
Amusement Park
Begin in western Sapporo at the chocolate-themed park. The factory exhibits and sweet-making activities are the main reason to come; this is a paid attraction with shopping and cafés alongside it.
Sapporo City Museum
Museum, History Museum
Return towards central Sapporo for the old Court of Appeals building at Odori’s western end. Its restored courtroom and local-history displays make a compact visit before continuing to Nakajima Park.
Nakajima Park
Park
Take a daylight walk around the ponds and historic buildings. In the snowy season, the park also offers cross-country skiing, making this a good place to try a winter activity close to the centre.
Houheikan
Museum
Visit the blue-and-white former hotel within Nakajima Park for its Meiji-era rooms and architectural details. It gives the park outing an indoor stop before the evening viewpoint.
Mount Moiwa
Peak, Park Nature
Finish with the city lights from the summit observation area, reached by ropeway and mini cable car. Choose a clear evening and use the lifts for this visit; a snowy summit hike is not part of the route.
Optional winter extras
Optional winter extras
Sapporo
Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park
Park
Swap most of a city day for Takino Snow World when its winter season is running. Tube sledding, snowshoeing and beginner snow activities make this a substantial outing south of Sapporo, with a bus journey each way.
Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill
Science Attraction, Observatory
Choose the winter snow-park activities as an alternative half-day south of the centre. The Clark statue and city view are here year-round, while tubing and other snow activities depend on the seasonal programme.
