Harbour views, brick warehouses and Christmas stalls give Hamburg a different feel from the usual old-town market trip. Spend three days around the waterfront and centre, with indoor stops for cold afternoons.

Day 1 — Historic centre & Speicherstadt
Hamburg Town Hall
Monument
Start with the Rathaus façade and courtyard, then walk south towards St Nikolai and the warehouse district. The square in front becomes the main Christmas market; return for the lights later.
St. Nikolai Memorial
Historic Site
The ruined church is a memorial to the destruction of Hamburg in the Second World War. The exhibition gives the site its context; the tower lift adds a view over the old centre.
Chilehaus Hamburg
Attraction, Core Attraction
Walk around the pointed eastern corner to see why this brick office building is compared to a ship. This is a short architecture stop on the way to the Speicherstadt.
Speicherstadt
Attraction, Core Attraction
Follow the canals and bridges between the red-brick warehouses. The view from Poggenmühlenbrücke towards the Wasserschloss is a good short detour before Miniatur Wunderland.
Miniatur Wunderland
Museum
Make this the main indoor visit of day one. The miniature railways, cities and working airport reward a longer look; book a timed ticket before choosing the rest of your afternoon.
Hauptkirche St. Petri
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Head back into the centre for the Christmas stalls around St Petri. Crafts and hot food make this a useful first market stop before the larger Rathausmarkt nearby.
City Hall Marketplace
Public Plaza
The historic Christmas market runs from 23 November to 23 December in 2026. Come after dark for the illuminated Rathaus, wooden stalls and a hot drink; this is the main festive stop of the day.
Alsterhaus
Heritage, History Landmark
Browse the department store if you want to shop, then cross Jungfernstieg to the lakeside Weißerzauber market. Its white tents and views over the Binnenalster make a different finish to the evening from the Rathaus stalls.
Day 2 — Harbour & waterfront
Day 2 — Harbour & waterfront
Church of St. Michael
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Start the harbour day at the church Hamburg calls the Michel. Visit the interior, then choose the tower if you want a high view of the port before walking down to the waterfront.
St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel
Historic Site
Walk down to the Landungsbrücken piers, then enter the old pedestrian tunnel beneath the Elbe. Cross to Steinwerder for the opposite-bank skyline and return through the tunnel to continue east along the waterfront.
Cap San Diego
Museum, History Museum
This preserved cargo ship is moored beside the waterfront route. Tour the decks and engine room if ships interest you; otherwise enjoy the harbour view here and make the Maritime Museum your longer visit.
Elbe Philharmonic Hall
Music Venue
Visit the Plaza for views over the harbour and HafenCity. A Plaza visit is separate from a concert ticket, so you can see the building without planning an evening performance.
International Maritime Museum Hamburg
Museum
Choose this for model ships, navigation and the history of seafaring inside a former warehouse. It is a substantial museum: use it as the main indoor visit today, or swap it for the Cap San Diego tour.
Day 3 — Alster, art & St. Pauli
Day 3 — Alster, art & St. Pauli
Hamburger Kunsthalle
Museum, Art Museum
Begin with the art collection near the main station. Pick the galleries that interest you rather than trying to cover the whole museum, then walk towards the Alster for the outdoor part of the day.
Alsterufer
Recreational Trail Or Path, Hiking Trail
Walk beside the Alster for open water and city views. From this eastern shore, return towards Kennedybrücke and cross towards Dammtor and Planten un Blomen; a short waterside stroll fits better than a full lake circuit.
Planten un Blomen
Attraction, Core Attraction
Use the park paths as a green link towards St Pauli. In December the appeal is a quiet walk between indoor stops, rather than summer flower displays or the seasonal water-light concerts.
Panoptikum
Museum
The wax museum is a compact indoor stop before an evening in St Pauli. It works well if you want a lighter visit after the Kunsthalle; skip it for more time around the Alster if wax figures are not your thing.
Reeperbahn
Attraction, Core Attraction
Finish in St Pauli if you want bars, music and a livelier evening. This is Hamburg’s adult nightlife district; for a quieter Christmas finish, return to the central markets instead.

Chocoversum
Museum, Museum Gallery
Swap this chocolate-making visit into day one near the Chilehaus. It is a good choice with children or if you would rather make and taste chocolate than spend the afternoon at Miniatur Wunderland.
Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe
Museum
Choose the Museum of Arts and Crafts for design, furniture, fashion and decorative arts. Near the main station, it is a convenient alternative to the Kunsthalle on day three.
