Destination: Munich, GermanyCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 12th October 2026
Three days of Christmas stalls, Bavarian food and palace rooms, with the old town on foot and an afternoon beyond Marienplatz. A good fit for a first Munich visit with markets at the heart of it.

Day 1 — Historic centre
Image of Marienplatz

Marienplatz

Square, Landmark
Start with the town-hall square, then return for the Christmas stalls after dark. The 2026 Christkindlmarkt runs 20 November–24 December; look for glass ornaments and gingerbread among the food stands.

St. Peter

Place of Worship, History Landmark
The church stands beside the nativity-market area, a good stop for carved figures and miniature houses. Climb the tower for rooftops and the market below, or keep this as a short church visit.

Viktualienmarkt

Farmers Market
Make this your lunch stop: browse the food stalls for bread, cheese and something hot. It is a working food market rather than a dedicated Christmas market, with more choice earlier in the day.
Image of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Munich

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Munich

Historic Site
This is the Frauenkirche, Munich’s twin-towered cathedral. Step inside for the scale of the nave before continuing through the old town towards the Residenz.
Image of Residenz

Residenz

Attraction, Core Attraction
Choose the palace rooms for the main indoor visit today. The courtyards also host a Christmas village in Advent, so this is a useful place to combine royal interiors with an evening market.
Image of Odeonsplatz

Odeonsplatz

Square, Core Attraction
The yellow Theatinerkirche and Feldherrnhalle frame this square beside the Residenz. It is a short outdoor stop on the way to the Hofgarten, rather than another long visit.
Image of Hofgarten

Hofgarten

Garden, Botanical Garden
Walk through the formal garden and its central pavilion after the palace. Keep the walk short in December, then head back into the old town for dinner.

Day 2 — Art and English Garden

Day 2 — Art and English Garden
Image of Königsplatz

Königsplatz

Public Plaza
Start the art district here, among the broad steps and classical museum façades. The square leads naturally towards the Pinakothek galleries a few streets east.
Image of Alte Pinakothek

Alte Pinakothek

Museum, Art Museum
Choose this gallery for Old Master paintings. Make it the main museum of the day; the Pinakothek der Moderne is an alternative if modern art and design appeal more.
Image of Pinakothek der Moderne

Pinakothek der Moderne

Museum, Modern Art Museum
Choose this instead of the Alte Pinakothek for modern art, architecture and design. Visiting both makes a museum-heavy day, so shorten the park walk if you want to do that.
Image of Siegestor

Siegestor

Monument
Pass the triumphal arch on the walk towards the English Garden. Its post-war inscription makes it a memorial to peace as well as a city landmark.
Image of English Garden

English Garden

Park
Use the southern paths for a short winter walk, rather than trying to cover this enormous park. The nearby streets offer plenty of places for a hot drink before the evening market.
Image of Eisbach surfer wave

Eisbach surfer wave

Historic Site
Pause at the bridge beside Haus der Kunst to see the river channel. Surfing conditions and access can change; the short riverside walk is worthwhile without making a surf display the reason for the visit.
Image of Wittelsbacherplatz

Wittelsbacherplatz

Public Plaza
Finish at the medieval-style Christmas market, with crafts and hot food around the square. It is close to Odeonsplatz, so the route brings you back towards the centre for the evening.

Day 3 — Nymphenburg and Olympiapark

Day 3 — Nymphenburg and Olympiapark
Image of Nymphenburg Palace

Nymphenburg Palace

Historic Site
Take the tram out for a morning in the palace rooms. This is the main visit of day three; the park is an easy extension immediately outside.
Image of Schlosspark Nymphenburg

Schlosspark Nymphenburg

Park
Walk the central canal and nearby paths after the palace. The ornamental buildings have seasonal opening, so this stop is about the grounds rather than a circuit of every pavilion.

Olympiapark München

Park
The Olympic grounds make a second area to explore after Nymphenburg, reached by public transport. Follow the lakeside paths and see the stadium roofs; the Olympic Tower is closed for renovation.
Image of BMW Museum

BMW Museum

Museum
Pick the museum for the history of BMW cars and motorcycles. Pair it with the park if you enjoy engineering; otherwise spend the afternoon back among the old-town Christmas stalls.
Image of BMW Welt

BMW Welt

Attraction, Core Attraction
Across from the museum, this is the contemporary vehicle showroom and striking modern building. A brief look works well after the museum without adding another full-length attraction.

Deutsches Museum

Museum
Swap this in for the palace or art-gallery morning if science and engineering interest you. The museum is substantial: choose a few departments instead of trying to see everything.
Image of Sendlinger Tor

Sendlinger Tor

Historic Site
Use this medieval gate as the start of a short shopping walk up Sendlinger Straße. It pairs well with the nearby Asamkirche and leads back towards the Christmas stalls in the centre.
