Marseille offers a city break shaped by the sea, with working harbours, hillside views and neighbourhood streets. Three days cover the Old Port, Le Panier and major museums, followed by a walk along the coast.

Day 1 — Old Port & Le Panier
Day 1 — Old Port & Le Panier
Old Port of Marseille
Historic Site
Start at the harbour beside the fishing boats and walk along the northern quay. The port is the reference point for the first day, with Le Panier rising behind it and the sea beyond the entrance.
Old Port Canopy (Ombrière)
Attraction, Core Attraction
Pause beneath Norman Foster’s mirrored canopy at the eastern end of the harbour. Its polished underside reflects the waterfront and the people crossing the square.
La Major Cathedral
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Follow the northern waterfront to the striped cathedral above the docks. Its huge nineteenth-century interior contrasts with the small streets you will explore in Le Panier.
Le Panier
Historic Quarter, District
Walk uphill through the oldest neighbourhood’s narrow lanes and small squares. Follow Rue du Panier and Rue des Moulins, then turn towards the Vieille Charité for the main indoor visit.
Vieille Charité Marseille
Museum, Art Museum
The former almshouse surrounds a chapel with arcaded galleries. Visit the courtyard, then choose its archaeological or African, Oceanian and Amerindian art collections for a longer stop.
Day 2 — Museums
Day 2 — Museums
Marseille History Museum
Museum, History Museum
Begin the museum day with the city’s Greek origins, ancient harbour remains and later maritime history. The museum sits beside the excavated port within the Centre Bourse complex.
Mucem
Museum, Architecture
$$
Head to the waterfront museum for Mediterranean history and changing exhibitions. Cross the high footbridge to Fort Saint-Jean and its terraces; the outdoor route is part of the appeal.
Cosquer Méditerranée
Museum, History Museum
Finish nearby with the replica of the submerged prehistoric Cosquer Cave. The seated journey lasts about 35 minutes, followed by the exhibition upstairs; reserve a timed entry for the afternoon.
Day 3 — Coast & Basilica Views
Day 3 — Coast & Basilica Views
Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica
Basilica, Viewpoint, Landmark
$
Start the coastal day at the hilltop basilica for its mosaics, votive boats and panorama over the city and islands. Bus 60 runs from the Old Port, avoiding the steep climb before the longer waterfront walk.
Vallon des Auffes
Fishing Village, Viewpoint
$
Descend towards this small fishing harbour tucked beneath the coastal road. Walk down to the boats and bridge for a close view of the waterfront before continuing south.
Corniche Kennedy
Bridge, History Landmark
Follow the seafront promenade towards the Prado beaches. The Corniche is a long stretch of coast: walk the section that interests you, or use bus 83 for part of the journey south.
Parc Borély
Park
Leave the waterfront for the formal paths, lawns and lake around the château. This is a substantial park visit near the Prado beaches, with space for a longer afternoon walk.
Prado Beach
Beach
Finish by the broad beach parks south of the centre. In warm weather this is the swimming part of the trip; in cooler months, walk the shore and watch the sunset over the bay.
Optional extras
Optional extras
Calanque de Sugiton
National Park, Beach, Viewpoint
$
Replace the coastal day with a hike from Luminy to the limestone cove. Bus B1 serves the trailhead; the cove is roughly 45 minutes downhill, with a steeper return. Summer entry uses a free reservation, and fire-risk closures can stop hikes.
Calanque de Morgiou
Attraction, Core Attraction
A longer hiking alternative to the city coast, with a small harbour between limestone cliffs. Bus 22 reaches Les Baumettes, followed by about an hour on foot to the cove. Summer fire-risk closures apply to this part of the national park.
Château d'If
Castle, Historic Site, Island
$$
Choose a boat trip from the Old Port to the island fortress and former prison associated with The Count of Monte Cristo. The castle visit and sea crossing replace a museum or the coastal day; departures depend on sea conditions.
Frioul Islands
Quarter, Core Attraction
Choose the Frioul ferry for island paths, coves and views back towards Marseille. It suits a longer outdoor day; spend the afternoon on the islands instead of adding them after the mainland coast.
Palais Longchamp
Monument
An alternative afternoon east of the centre, reached by tram or metro. Walk around the monumental fountains and gardens built to celebrate the arrival of water from the Durance.
Marseille Museum of Fine Arts
Museum, Art Museum
Pair this collection of paintings and sculpture with Palais Longchamp, where it occupies one wing. Choose it in place of Cosquer if an art museum appeals more than the prehistoric cave experience.
