Zagreb’s Advent stalls and lights spread between its parks and hilltop streets. This three-day visit pairs festive evenings with the Upper Town and small museums, for a Christmas break with plenty beyond shopping.

Day 1 — Upper Town
Day 1 — Upper Town
Ban Jelačić Square
Public Plaza
Start at Zagreb’s central square, then climb the short steps to Dolac. Return after dark for the centre’s Christmas lights; this is also an easy meeting point if your group splits up.
Dolac Market
Marketplace, Market Shopping
Come in the morning for the produce stalls above the main square. This is an everyday food market, not the Christmas market; it makes a useful breakfast or snack stop before the Upper Town.
Zagreb Cathedral
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Visit the cathedral square on the short walk from Dolac to the Upper Town. Treat this as an exterior stop; the route does not depend on entering the cathedral during its restoration.
Stone Gate
Historic Site
The passage contains a small candlelit shrine. Walk through on the way to St Mark’s Square; people come here to pray, so keep conversations quiet inside.
St. Mark's Church
Church, Historic Landmark
The tiled roof is the reason to come to St Mark’s Square. Make it a brief exterior stop between Stone Gate and the Museum of Broken Relationships.
Museum of Broken Relationships
Museum
Ordinary objects tell personal stories of relationships that ended. Make this the main indoor visit on the Upper Town day, rather than trying to fit every small museum into one afternoon.
Lotrščak Tower
Museum, Museum Gallery
The Grič cannon marks noon from this tower. If you want to hear it, visit before lunch, then return to the nearby Upper Town streets and museum.
Day 2 — Lower Town
Day 2 — Lower Town
Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb
Theatre, Performance Culture
Begin the Lower Town walk outside the yellow theatre building. A performance is a separate evening option; continue towards the Technical Museum for the main daytime visit.
Nikola Tesla Technical Museum
Museum
The best substantial indoor stop on this day for anyone interested in machines, engineering and Tesla. Start here before walking east towards the station squares and Advent lights.
King Tomislav Square
Historic Site
Walk from the station towards the Art Pavilion through this long central square. It is part of the traditional Advent area; use it as the southern end of the evening walk through the parks.
Art pavilion in Zagreb
Museum
The pavilion provides the backdrop to King Tomislav Square. This route includes the exterior, so it does not depend on an exhibition being open inside.
Trg Nikole Zrinskog
Square, Core Attraction
Zrinjevac is the tree-lined park to visit after dark for Zagreb’s Advent atmosphere. Walk here from King Tomislav Square through Strossmayer Square, rather than taking separate tram trips between the parks.
Trg Josipa Jurja Strossmayera
Square, Core Attraction
Strossmayer Square lies between Tomislav Square and Zrinjevac. Include it in the evening walk through the traditional Advent area; food stalls and specific event locations vary with the annual programme.
Day 3 — Museums, promenades and Maksimir
Day 3 — Museums, promenades and Maksimir
Zagreb City Museum
Museum
A good indoor start to the day: models, objects and street scenes trace how Zagreb grew. The museum is in the Upper Town, so combine it with the nearby promenades rather than crossing town twice.
Tunel Grič
Monument
Grič Tunnel is a short passage beneath the Upper Town. It fits between the City Museum area and the central streets; use it as a brief stop, not the centrepiece of the day.
Strossmayerovo šetalište
Historic Site
Strossmayer Promenade gives views over the Lower Town roofs. Walk it in daylight before heading out to Maksimir, with a café stop in the centre between the two.
Maksimir
Park
Use the afternoon for a walk around the park’s lower lakes and broad paths. It is east of the centre: take a tram out after the Upper Town visits, rather than walking the whole way.
Optional extras
Optional extras
Museum of Naïve Art
Museum, Art Museum
An alternative Upper Town museum for Croatian naïve painting. Swap it for the City Museum or add it if you want a more art-focused day; it is close to St Mark’s Square.
Museum of Hangovers
Museum
A lighter, adult-oriented alternative built around drinking stories and interactive exhibits. Choose it for your group’s interests rather than adding it automatically to the main route.
