Helsinki suits a city break with sea air, good design and room to slow down. These three days combine the harbour and markets, Suomenlinna’s island paths and the city’s distinctive architecture, with extra museum options.

Day 1 — Harbour and historic centre
Day 1 — Harbour and historic centre
Senate Square
Public Plaza
Start with the neoclassical square and the view up to Helsinki Cathedral. The harbour is only a short walk away, making this an easy first morning on foot.
Helsinki Cathedral
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Climb the broad steps for the view over Senate Square, then make a short visit inside the Lutheran cathedral. Continue towards the waterfront rather than returning across the centre.
Uspenski Cathedral
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Head to Katajanokka for the red-brick Orthodox cathedral and harbour views from its hill. It is a short walk from Market Square, so pair it with the waterfront part of the day.
Market Square
Market
Browse the harbour stalls for berries, pastries or a small lunch. The open-air market is most active in the warmer months; the covered Old Market Hall is the nearby indoor option.
Old Market Hall
Historic Site
Use the covered hall for lunch, especially in cold or wet weather. Salmon soup, bread and small food stalls make it a practical break between the central sights.
Esplanade Park
Historic Site
Walk the length of the central park after lunch, with cafés and design shops along the surrounding streets. This is a relaxed stretch of the route rather than another ticketed attraction.
Day 2 — Suomenlinna
Day 2 — Suomenlinna
Kauppatori
Ferry Terminal, Transport
Return to the Market Square ferry pier for the HSL boat to Suomenlinna. The service runs all year and uses normal HSL tickets; this card marks the departure point for the island day.
Suomenlinna
Fortress, Island, Heritage
From the main pier, follow the blue-signed walking route through the fortress towards King’s Gate. Plan this as a substantial island outing, with lunch on the island and a walk back to the ferry.
Suomenlinna Museum
Museum
The main museum explains the fortress’s Swedish, Russian and Finnish history. Make it the day’s indoor visit before continuing south through the walls and shoreline paths.
King’s Gate Quay
Monument
Walk to the ceremonial gateway at the southern end of the island route. Return along the fortress paths to the main pier for the HSL ferry, rather than assuming a year-round boat leaves from this quay.
Suomenlinna Church
Place of Worship, History Landmark
See the church and its lighthouse tower near the main village on the return walk. It is a brief stop before the ferry; the island paths are the main activity today.
Day 3 — Architecture and museums
Day 3 — Architecture and museums
Temppeliaukio Church
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Begin the architecture day at the Rock Church, cut into granite beneath a copper dome. Go inside for the space and acoustics, then walk towards Töölönlahti and Finlandia Hall.
Finlandia Hall
Theatre, Performance Culture
See Alvar Aalto’s white waterfront building from the lakeside paths. A guided tour or concert is a separate choice; the exterior fits naturally into this architecture walk.
Helsinki Central Library Oodi
Library
Go upstairs for the bright reading floor and city views, then explore the public spaces below. Oodi is a working public library, and one of the strongest free stops on this route.
Amos Rex
Museum, Art Museum
Visit the contemporary art exhibitions beneath Lasipalatsi, or enjoy the sculpted courtyard above them. Choose this as the main art museum today if its current exhibition appeals.
Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki
Museum, Design
The former Design Museum is now part of the Architecture & Design Museum. Visit its Finnish design displays on Korkeavuorenkatu as the design-focused stop, or choose it instead of Amos Rex for a shorter museum day.
Optional extras
Optional extras
Helsinki Art Museum
Museum, Art Museum
Choose HAM in Tennispalatsi instead of Amos Rex for a different art exhibition. It is a museum swap for Day 3, rather than another visit to add to a full afternoon.
Sibelius Monument
Monument
Add the steel-pipe monument and surrounding seaside park to a walk through Töölö. It works best as an outdoor alternative to a museum, with more space and sea views beyond the centre.
Seurasaari Open-Air Museum
Museum
Choose Seurasaari for a slower half-day of wooded island paths and historic wooden buildings. Museum interiors are seasonal; the outdoor island walk is the year-round alternative.
