Begin above the old town at Hohensalzburg Fortress. The funicular from Festungsgasse saves the uphill walk; spend about two hours exploring the courtyards, museum rooms and views across the Salzach towards the Alps. This is the weekend’s longest sightseeing stop. Come back down to Kapitelplatz, then walk to the cathedral for the next visit. The squares and lanes below the fortress make a good place for lunch.

Look up into the cathedral’s baroque dome, then find the bronze font where Mozart was baptised. Around forty-five minutes fits after the fortress, with Domplatz and Residenzplatz just outside. Walk west to St Peter’s Abbey and its cemetery next, then take lunch in the old town before Mozart’s Birthplace on Getreidegasse.

Monastery, Historic Site, Cemetery
$
Walk through St Peter’s courtyard into the cemetery beneath the fortress rock. Its arcades, small chapels and flower-covered graves make a quiet contrast to the grand cathedral nearby. Roughly forty-five minutes covers the church and cemetery; the rock-cut catacombs are a separate short visit if they interest you. Continue through the old town for lunch and Getreidegasse afterwards.

The yellow house at Getreidegasse 9 is where Mozart was born and grew up. Spend about an hour in the museum, where instruments, portraits and family objects give a picture of his childhood. Continue through Getreidegasse’s courtyards and passages afterwards, then finish beside the Salzach. An evening concert suits the theme of the trip; tomorrow’s Mozart museum covers the family’s later years across the river.

Day 2 — Mirabell, Mozart and Kapuzinerberg

Park
Start among Mirabell’s formal flower beds and fountains, with the cathedral and fortress framed beyond the garden. The Pegasus fountain and the steps nearby will be familiar to fans of The Sound of Music. Spend about an hour walking the gardens, then head south to Makartplatz for the Mozart Residence. These two visits make a compact morning on the east bank of the Salzach.

Mozart Residence

Museum
At Makartplatz 8, the Mozart family’s larger home tells the next part of the story begun at yesterday’s birthplace. The exhibition focuses on family life and music, with about an hour enough for the visit. Music lovers will enjoy seeing both homes; travellers who prefer just one can spend this hour along the river instead. Take lunch around Linzergasse before the afternoon climb onto Kapuzinerberg.

After the Mozart Residence, walk along Linzergasse to St Sebastian’s Church and the cemetery behind it. The arcaded cemetery contains Mozart family graves, including those of his father Leopold and widow Constanze. A quiet half-hour visit fits before lunch and the Kapuzinerberg climb. This adds a small piece of Mozart’s family story without another museum ticket.

Kapuzinerberg

Peak, Park Nature
From Linzergasse, climb through the Felixpforte gateway towards the Capuchin monastery. The path is steep, with viewpoints looking across the river to the cathedral and fortress. Spend roughly ninety minutes on the climb, viewpoints and woodland paths. The Hettwerbastei lookout near the monastery gives a fine old-town panorama well below the summit. Return to Linzergasse and the Salzach for the final riverside walk.

Museum der Moderne

Museum, Contemporary Art Museum
Art lovers can replace the Mozart Residence and Kapuzinerberg afternoon on Day 2 with this museum on Mönchsberg. Take the lift from the old town for changing modern and contemporary art exhibitions, then walk the hilltop paths above the river. Around two hours covers the galleries and a short walk. The museum terrace gives a different view of the fortress and city from yesterday’s visit.

Kollegienkirche

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Near Getreidegasse on Day 1, the university church offers a short architectural detour after Mozart’s Birthplace. Fischer von Erlach’s tall white interior feels very different from the cathedral’s more decorated spaces. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough for a look inside before continuing to the river. Choose this extra if church architecture interests you; the main route already covers two major churches.

Residenzplatz

Public Plaza
Return to Residenzplatz near the end of Day 1 for a slower look at the fountain, cathedral frontage and former archbishops’ residence. The square lies beside the cathedral, so this is a twenty-minute extension of the old-town walk rather than another ticketed visit. It suits travellers who enjoy architecture and photography, especially once the main sightseeing groups have moved on.
