Day 1 — Old Lyon & Fourvière

Day 1 — Old Lyon & Fourvière
Image of Basilica of Fourvière

Basilica of Fourvière

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Start above the old town at Fourvière, reached by funicular from Vieux Lyon. Inside, look closely at the basilica’s mosaics; outside, the terrace shows how the two rivers shape the city. About an hour here leaves a comfortable morning for the Roman theatres a short walk south. Afterwards, descend to Saint-Jean and lunch in the old-town lanes.

Theatre, Performance Culture
Walk south from the basilica to the stone tiers of Lyon’s Roman theatre and the smaller Odeon beside it. These outdoor ruins give a sense of the city long before its Renaissance streets. Spend around forty-five minutes exploring the site, then head downhill to Saint-Jean. The archaeological museum alongside is a separate, longer option in the extras section.

Saint-Jean Cathedral

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Back at the foot of Fourvière, step into Saint-Jean Cathedral before lunch. The cathedral and its square make a good starting point for Rue Saint-Jean and the courtyards of Vieux Lyon. Roughly half an hour inside, followed by a walk through the surrounding lanes, fits this part of the day. Cross the Saône towards Bellecour afterwards.

Square, Core Attraction
Use this large square as the start of an afternoon on the Presqu’île. From here, walk north along Rue de la République or follow the Saône embankment back towards the old town. The square itself takes only a short visit; the surrounding streets are the reason to linger. For dinner, a Lyonnais bouchon offers dishes such as quenelles and praline tart.

Day 2 — Markets & Green Spaces

Marketplace, Market Shopping
Make the indoor market the first stop of the second day, while the counters are busy. Browse the cheeses, charcuterie and pastries, then choose a counter for an early lunch or buy something to take away. A pink praline brioche is a local choice. This is a food visit rather than a sightseeing circuit; an hour or two suits it. Head north towards the Rhône and the park afterwards.

Park
Spend the early afternoon around the lake and paths of Lyon’s largest central park. The botanical gardens add interest for plant lovers, while the lawns suit a slower break after the market. About ninety minutes to two hours gives this part of the day room to breathe. Follow the Rhône embankment south afterwards, crossing back to the Presqu’île for Place des Terreaux.

Public Plaza
Finish beside the Bartholdi fountain and the Hôtel de Ville. The Musée des Beaux-Arts faces the square; make it an optional extra if you want another indoor visit, rather than trying to fit it into a packed afternoon. For the final river walk, head west to the Saône and follow the quays. The restaurants around the square make an easy dinner stop.

Lugdunum Museum and Roman Theatres

Museum, Museum Gallery
Choose the indoor Lugdunum museum on Day 1 if Roman history interests you. Mosaics, inscriptions and everyday objects explain the city whose theatre you have just visited outside. Give the museum around ninety minutes, shortening the afternoon Presqu’île walk to make room. This card is for the museum galleries; the outdoor theatre already appears in the main route.

Cinema & Miniature Museum

Museum
Film fans can spend around ninety minutes among movie props, sets and miniature scenes in this museum on Rue Saint-Jean. It fits Day 1 after the cathedral and lunch, replacing some of the afternoon shopping streets. The exhibits offer a different kind of indoor visit from Lyon’s churches and Roman sites, particularly if you are travelling with older children.

Park
For another view on Day 1, walk towards this small hillside garden near Place de l’Abbé-Larue after the Roman theatres. Its terrace looks over Lyon and makes a quiet half-hour stop before descending to the old town. Choose it if you enjoy viewpoints and walking; skip the detour if you are heading into Lugdunum’s museum instead.
