Bristol is a good weekend for people who like waterfront walks, independent shops and a bit of engineering history. Spend one day around the harbour and old city, then climb towards Clifton and its suspension bridge.

Begin aboard Brunel’s iron steamship, with restored cabins, decks and a view of the hull from the dry dock. This is the day’s longest visit, before walking east along the Floating Harbour.

The dockside museum tells Bristol’s story through its people, work and communities, including the city’s links to slavery. Choose a few galleries after the ship visit. Normally open Tuesday to Sunday.

Cross the harbour to this contemporary-art centre in a former warehouse. The exhibitions offer an alternative to another history collection, and the quayside connects directly with the next part of the walk.

Start the second day with art, archaeology and natural-history collections beside the university. Pick a few rooms, then head into Brandon Hill for the outdoor part of the route.

The tower stands at the top of Brandon Hill, with views across the harbour and rooftops. From the park, continue west through Clifton’s streets towards the village and bridge.

The hill above the Avon Gorge gives a clear view of the suspension bridge. The observatory’s camera obscura and cave are paid options; the surrounding viewpoint is part of the walking route.

Cross the bridge for views into the Avon Gorge and back towards Clifton. The visitor centre is on the Leigh Woods side; return through Clifton Village for shops and café terraces.

The Georgian House Museum

This former merchant’s home explains domestic life alongside the wealth generated by slavery and the sugar trade. It is near Brandon Hill and opens Thursday to Sunday from April to December.
