Gdańsk at Christmas: A 3-Day City Break

Destination: Gdańsk, PolandCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 13th October 2026
Spend three December days between Gdańsk’s Christmas stalls, merchant streets and waterfront. Major museums give history lovers a reason to linger indoors, with the market saved for after dark.

Day 1 — Main Town

Day 1 — Main Town
Image of Golden Gate

Golden Gate

Historic Site
Begin at the western end of the Royal Route and walk down Długa towards Long Market. The Christmas stalls at Targ Węglowy are nearby, so return here after the museums rather than making a separate cross-city trip.

Long Market

Public Plaza
Follow the merchant-house façades towards the Green Gate. Turn north onto Mariacka Street for its raised terraces and St Mary’s Basilica, then rejoin the route at the waterfront.

Neptune's Fountain

Attraction, Core Attraction
A short stop in front of Artus Court, not a separate activity. The fountain and surrounding façades are best taken in as part of the Long Market walk.

Artus Court

Museum, History Museum
Step inside the former gathering place of Gdańsk’s merchants. Choose this or the Amber Museum as your main first-day interior if you prefer a slower afternoon.
Image of Muzeum Bursztynu

Muzeum Bursztynu

Museum, Museum Gallery
The Amber Museum occupies the Great Mill, a short walk north of the Royal Route. Its objects and jewellery explain why amber is so closely associated with the Baltic coast.

Targ Węglowy

Public Plaza
The main Christmas-market square. The 2026 market runs 20 November–23 December; spend the evening here browsing stalls and eating supper. A visit after Christmas will miss this market.

Day 2 — Waterfront & History

Day 2 — Waterfront & History

Muzeum II Wojny Światowej

Museum, History Museum
The Museum of the Second World War is the main visit today: give its extensive exhibition the morning. The European Solidarity Centre below is an alternative major museum, not another full visit to squeeze into the same day.

Museum of the Polish Post Office

Museum, Museum Gallery
A smaller stop about the defence of the Polish Post Office in 1939, close to the Second World War museum. History enthusiasts can add it; others can continue to the river.

Gdańsk Crane

Museum, History Museum
Walk south along the Motława to this medieval harbour crane. Its riverside exterior belongs on the route even if you choose only one museum interior today.

Narodowe Muzeum Morskie w Gdańsku

Museum
The National Maritime Museum is the maritime-history alternative to the war museum. Choose it if ships and trading life interest you more; its waterfront setting also fits the walk to Granary Island.

Solidarity Museum (European Solidarity Centre)

Museum, Museum Gallery
Choose this instead of the Second World War museum for a day focused on Solidarity and the end of communist rule. It sits by the former shipyard, north of the central waterfront route.

Wyspa Spichrzów

Quarter, Core Attraction
Granary Island gives you views back across the Motława towards the Crane and merchant houses. Finish the riverside walk here, then choose a restaurant before returning to the Christmas stalls.

Day 3 — Oliwa & the Coast

Day 3 — Oliwa & the Coast
Image of Oliwa Park

Oliwa Park

Park
Take the train or tram out to Oliwa for the park and neighbouring cathedral. Start here in daylight; the quieter gardens make a change from the busy centre. Continue north to Sopot afterwards.
Image of Sopot Pier

Sopot Pier

Historic Site
Finish at the beach and pier for an open Baltic view. This is an outdoor walk rather than a long attraction visit; combine it with the seafront and Monte Cassino Street before the train back.

Monciak Street

Attraction, Core Attraction
Bohaterów Monte Cassino is Sopot’s pedestrian street between the railway station and seafront. Use it for lunch or a warm drink, then walk down to the pier; return to Gdańsk by SKM train.

Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski

Theatre, Performance Culture
Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre is an option for an evening performance or a separate architecture visit. Choose a programme you want to see; it is not a necessary daytime stop on the Christmas-market route.

Dom Uphagena

Museum
Uphagen House shows the rooms of an eighteenth-century merchant home on Długa. Add it to Day 1 if domestic interiors appeal more than amber, or use it as a short indoor alternative.

Museum of Gdansk

Museum
The Main Town Hall museum stands beside Long Market. Its interiors make another first-day option; choose it instead of a second museum rather than squeezing every interior into one afternoon.
Image of St. Catherine’s Church

St. Catherine’s Church

Place of Worship, History Landmark
An extra stop near the Great Mill and Amber Museum. Add the church to that part of Day 1 so you do not make a separate journey across the centre.
