Start along the harbourfront, then turn into the narrow timber passages behind the colourful warehouses. The courtyards and workshops show more of Bryggen than the familiar waterfront photograph.

Walk around the fortress grounds at the entrance to the harbour. Håkon’s Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower are separate paid visits; choose one for more medieval history rather than both after the museum.

Begin the second day on Domkirkeplassen, among the older streets east of the centre. The stone cathedral is a short architectural stop before the art collections around Lille Lungegårdsvannet.

Walk south to Rasmus Meyers allé for Norwegian paintings, including works by Edvard Munch and Nikolai Astrup. This is the main collection visit of the morning, in the building formerly known as KODE 3.

Continue uphill to the Natural History Museum at Muséplassen 3 for specimens, geology and displays on the natural world. Finish with the museum garden, next to the university buildings.

Begin the last day near the university with Bergen’s seafaring history, from older vessels to modern shipping. The models and objects explain the port before the walk back towards the waterfront.

Walk down through Sydnes towards the main pedestrian square and the Sailors’ Monument. Continue west into Nordnes through shopping streets and lanes of wooden houses.

Choose the cable car to Ulriken for a higher mountain outing instead of Fløyen. Take a bus to the lower station southeast of the centre, then spend the afternoon around the summit viewpoint and paths.

Grieg’s lakeside grounds and concerts make a separate outing south of the city, reached via light rail to Hop and a walk. The villa is closed for restoration; the museum and café have summer hours, while the park remains open in winter.
