Destination: Freiburg, GermanyCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 8th October 2026

Day 1 — Old Town

Day 1 — Old Town
Image of Freiburg Minster

Freiburg Minster

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Start with the Gothic minster and its carved details before walking around the square. The building is the old town’s main landmark and the anchor for the first morning.

Münstermarkt

Marketplace, Market Shopping
Make this a Saturday stop for produce stalls, flowers and local food around the minster. The regular market runs Monday to Saturday, so Sunday visitors will find a quieter square.

Historical Merchants' Hall

Museum
Look for the red façade and arcades on the south side of Münsterplatz. This is an exterior architecture stop beside the market, not a separate museum visit.

Rathausplatz

Square, Core Attraction
Walk through the old streets and their small water channels to the town-hall square. The buildings and adjoining lanes make a good pause before the art museum.
Image of Augustinermuseum

Augustinermuseum

Museum
Choose this for medieval and later art displayed in a former monastery. It is the main indoor visit of the afternoon, close to the old-town streets around Augustinerplatz.

Swabian Gate

Attraction, Core Attraction
Finish the old-town route at the Schwabentor, one of Freiburg’s surviving gates. The hillside rising behind it sets up the next day’s Schlossberg walk.

Day 2 — Schlossberg & Green Spaces

Day 2 — Schlossberg & Green Spaces

Stadtgarten Freiburg

Music Venue
Begin day two in the city garden below the Schlossberg. Its paths provide a gentle start before the uphill part of the morning.
Image of Schlossberg

Schlossberg

Peak, Park Nature
Follow the wooded paths above the city for changing views over the roofs and surrounding hills. Make this the main walk of the morning.

Kanonenplatz

Historic Site
Pause at this terrace for one of the clearest views of the old town and minster. It belongs to the Schlossberg walk, rather than a separate hill climb.
Image of Seepark

Seepark

Park, Park Nature
Return downhill and take the tram towards the western side of the city for a lakeside afternoon. The paths around Flückigersee give the day a flatter finish.

Japanischer Garten

Garden, Botanical Garden
The Japanese Garden is a small part of the Seepark outing. Visit it during the lake walk rather than planning another journey across town.

Colombischlössle

Museum, History Museum
Choose the archaeological museum in this small villa for an indoor alternative near the centre. It works well in place of the longer Seepark afternoon.

Botanischer Garten

Garden, Botanical Garden
Freiburg’s botanical garden offers another quieter green-space option north of the centre. Swap it for Seepark if plants interest you more than a longer lake walk.

Tier-Natur-Erlebnispark Mundenhof

Zoo, Core Attraction
Mundenhof is a large animal and nature park on the western outskirts. Make it a separate family half-day, replacing the Seepark outing rather than adding it after the hill walk.
