Destination: Erfurt, GermanyCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 13th October 2026
Erfurt’s cathedral steps and shop-lined Merchants’ Bridge give this Christmas weekend its shape. Two days cover the old town, its Jewish heritage and the market, with short walks between the main sights.

Day 1 — Cathedral & Petersberg

Erfurt Cathedral

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Start above Domplatz with the cathedral and neighbouring St Severus Church. The stained glass and choir make the cathedral the main interior visit; return to the square below for the Christmas market later.

Sankt Severi

Place of Worship, History Landmark
St Severus Church shares the hilltop with the cathedral. Visit both together, then continue towards Petersberg for a higher view over the old town and the market square.

Historic Site
Walk up to the fortress terraces for views back towards the cathedral. This is the main daylight outdoor part of the first day; the city centre and indoor visits come afterwards.

Evangelisches Augustinerkloster zu Erfurt

Place of Worship, History Landmark
The Augustinian monastery is linked to Martin Luther’s years in Erfurt. Choose a guided visit if you want to see the historic rooms; otherwise the church and surrounding streets form a shorter stop north of the old town.

Museum, Art Museum
Erfurt’s art museum makes a substantial indoor afternoon, especially if you prefer paintings and decorative arts to a monastery tour. Choose one longer interior visit before returning to the Christmas market.

Day 2 — Old Town & Krämerbrücke

Fischmarkt

Square, Core Attraction
The town hall and decorated merchants’ houses frame this central square. Walk from here through the small streets towards the Merchants’ Bridge, with shops and cafés close enough for an easy lunch break.

Merchants' Bridge

Attraction, Core Attraction
Cross the Krämerbrücke slowly: its houses and small workshops make it feel like a street rather than a bridge. Walk down to the riverside afterwards for the view of the buildings standing above the water.

Ägidienkirche

Place of Worship, History Landmark
St Giles’ Church marks the eastern entrance to the bridge. The church and gateway are part of the same short stop as Wenigemarkt; a tower visit is optional rather than essential to the route.

Domplatz

Public Plaza
The 2026 Erfurt Christmas market runs from 24 November to 22 December beneath the cathedral steps. Come in the late afternoon for stalls and food, then stay as the lights come on; both evenings can finish here.

Kleine Synagoge

Building, Core Attraction
Visit the Small Synagogue for Erfurt’s Jewish history this winter. The Old Synagogue and its treasure exhibition are closed for restoration from August 2026 until the expected reopening in February 2027, so they are not part of this route.

Wenigemarkt

Public Plaza
The small square sits just beyond the Merchants’ Bridge. Use it for a pause among the old-town streets, then follow the river back towards the centre and the evening market on Domplatz.

Stadtmuseum Erfurt

Museum, Museum Gallery
The city museum is an optional indoor visit for more background on Erfurt’s trading and civic history. Swap it for the Angermuseum if local history interests you more than art.

Museum
The Natural History Museum is a useful family alternative close to the old town. Its regional wildlife displays make it an easy addition on a wet afternoon without travelling beyond the centre.
