Potsdam rewards a longer weekend of palace interiors, landscaped parks and neighbourhood walks. Give Sanssouci a full day, then explore the Dutch Quarter and lakeside paths without rushing back to Berlin each evening.

Day 1 — Sanssouci Park
Day 1 — Sanssouci Park
Schloss Sanssouci
Historic Site, Palace
Make Sanssouci Palace the day’s main interior visit, then step onto the vineyard terraces. Its rooms are much smaller in scale than the vast park around them.
Sanssouci Park
Park
Follow the paths west through the landscaped park, linking the terraces, gardens and palace buildings. The walking between sights is a substantial part of this day.
Chinesisches Haus
Attraction, Core Attraction
The Chinese House is a small ornamental pavilion within the park. Its gilded figures and exterior make a short stop on the route west.
Neues Palais
Museum
The New Palace closes the western end of the park with a much grander façade than Sanssouci. Enjoy the exterior on this route, or choose its rooms as your second major palace visit.
Friedenskirche
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Return towards the park’s eastern entrance for the Church of Peace and its calm lakeside setting. It makes a quieter final stop before heading back into town.
Day 2 — Historic Centre
Day 2 — Historic Centre
St. Nikolaikirche
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Begin the city-centre day at St Nicholas’s Church, overlooking the Old Market. Its dome and classical façade are prominent landmarks around the square.
Alter Markt
Public Plaza
Walk around the reconstructed historic centre and its mix of old and rebuilt architecture. The Potsdam Museum is close by for the next stop.
Potsdam Museum
Museum
Use the city-history museum to put Potsdam’s palaces, destruction and reconstruction in context. This is the main museum stop in the centre.
Brandenburger Tor
Historic Site
Potsdam has its own Brandenburg Gate at the western end of the central shopping street. Walk here through the old centre, then continue towards the Dutch Quarter.
Holländisches Viertel Potsdam
Historic Site
The Dutch Quarter’s red-brick houses bring a different character to the city. Explore the streets for independent shops and a lunch or coffee break.
Nauener Tor
Historic Site
Finish the central walk at the neo-Gothic Nauener Gate, just north of the Dutch Quarter. It is a short architectural stop rather than another long visit.
Day 3 — New Garden & Babelsberg
Day 3 — New Garden & Babelsberg
Neuer Garten
Park, Park Nature
Start the third day on the paths of the New Garden beside the Heiliger See. The park and lakeside setting lead naturally to the Marble Palace.
Marmor Palace
Museum
The Marble Palace stands beside the lake in the New Garden. Choose its interior for the day’s palace visit, with the exterior and water views part of the same stop.
Park Babelsberg
Park
Travel across Potsdam to Babelsberg for the afternoon rather than walking between both parks. Follow the sloping paths above the Havel for a different set of lake and city views.
Babelsberg Palace
Historic Site
The neo-Gothic palace is the architectural focus of the park walk. This route concentrates on its exterior, terraces and landscape.
Optional extras
Optional extras
Flatowturm
Viewpoint, Core Attraction
The Flatow Tower is an optional extension within Babelsberg Park. Follow the park paths to its exterior; a tower visit adds a higher viewpoint when open.
Orangerieschloss
Historic Site, Palace
The Orangery Palace is an optional architectural detour within Sanssouci Park. Its long façade and elevated setting work well if you prefer more outdoor exploring to a second palace interior.
Museum Barberini
Museum, Art Museum
Choose the Barberini for art beside the Old Market, especially if painting interests you more than the city-history museum. Use it as a swap on day two.
Belvedere auf dem Pfingstberg
Attraction, Core Attraction
The hilltop Belvedere offers an alternative north of the New Garden for architecture and broad views. Pair it with the lakeside park instead of crossing to Babelsberg.
