Destination: Basel, SwitzerlandCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 13th October 2026
Basel combines Christmas markets with one of Switzerland’s best city breaks for art lovers. Walk between the old-town squares and Rhine, then spend an afternoon in a museum before returning to the stalls.

Day 1 — Old Town & Rhine

Basel, Marktplatz

Public Plaza
Start in the market square in front of the red town hall. Walk through the old-town lanes towards Spalentor, then return towards the Rhine; save the two main Christmas markets for the later part of the day.

Basel Münster

Place of Worship, History Landmark
The cathedral gives the old town its skyline. Visit the interior, then step around to the Pfalz terrace behind it; the Christmas market in Münsterplatz is immediately outside.

Pfalz

Viewpoint, Core Attraction
This terrace behind the cathedral looks across the Rhine to Kleinbasel. It is a brief viewpoint on the same stop as the Münster, rather than a separate outing.

Mittlere Brücke

Bridge, History Landmark
Cross the Middle Bridge for the view back towards the cathedral and old-town riverfront. Walk a little way along the Kleinbasel bank before returning to the Christmas markets on the opposite side.

Spalentor

Attraction, Core Attraction
The medieval gateway is at the western edge of the old town. Reach it through Spalenberg’s shop-lined streets from Marktplatz, then loop back into the centre instead of retracing the main shopping streets.

Basel Münsterplatz

Public Plaza
Basel’s 2026 Christmas market runs from 26 November to 23 December on Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz. Visit this square after the cathedral, with time to browse before walking down to the second market.

Barfüsserplatz

Public Plaza
This is the other main Christmas-market square, a short walk downhill from the Münster. Make it the evening food-and-stall stop, then continue towards the Tinguely Fountain and Theaterplatz.

Tinguely Fountain

Historic Site
Jean Tinguely’s moving sculptures occupy a pool beside the theatre. Combine the stop with nearby Theaterplatz’s Christmas village, which is scheduled from 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Day 2 — Art & Riverside

Day 2 — Art & Riverside

Kunstmuseum Basel

Museum, Art Museum
Choose this for the main art visit of the second morning. Its collection spans older European painting and modern art; Museum Tinguely and the Paper Mill are alternatives if you prefer moving sculpture or hands-on craft.

Museum Tinguely Basel

Museum, Modern Art Museum
Choose this instead of the Kunstmuseum for Jean Tinguely’s mechanical sculptures. It is farther east along the Rhine, so use the tram or bus for the longer stretch rather than spending the winter afternoon entirely on foot.

Library
The Basel Paper Mill combines paper-making and printing history in an old mill beside the river. It is the strongest hands-on option for this museum day; choose it instead of a second large art collection.

Wettsteinbrücke

Bridge, History Landmark
Use the bridge for a short river crossing after your chosen museum, with views back towards the cathedral. Finish the day in the old town and return to whichever Christmas market you enjoyed most.

Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel

Museum, Art Museum
The Toy Worlds Museum is beside Barfüsserplatz and fits easily around the Christmas stalls. Dolls’ houses, miniatures and teddy bears make it a compact extra, or an indoor replacement for a longer river walk.

Fondation Beyeler

Museum, Art Museum
This art museum is in Riehen, reached by tram from central Basel. Give it its own half-day on a longer stay, or substitute it for the central museums; it is too much to add casually to an already full weekend.
