Innsbruck makes a winter break without skis easy: cable cars reach the mountain views, while palaces and museums fill the colder afternoons. This four-day route suits December onwards, with extra outings to Hall and Wattens.

Day 1 — Old Town
Day 1 — Old Town
Golden Roof Museum
Museum
Start on Herzog-Friedrich-Straße beneath the Golden Roof. The small museum explains Maximilian I and the city’s imperial past; the gilded balcony is visible from the square even without a ticket.
Stadtturm
Historic Site
Climb the medieval city tower for a close view over the old town’s roofs. This is the compact city panorama; tomorrow’s cable car gives you the much wider Alpine view.
Hofburg Innsbruck
Historic Site, Palace
Go inside for the imperial apartments and the richly decorated Giant’s Hall. This is the day’s main indoor visit, a short walk from the Golden Roof.
Court Church
Place of Worship, History Landmark
The bronze figures surrounding Emperor Maximilian’s cenotaph are the reason to visit. The tomb itself is empty: he is buried in Wiener Neustadt.
Cathedral of St. James
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Step inside for the painted ceiling and the Madonna painting above the altar. It is an active cathedral, so sightseeing pauses during services.
Maria-Theresien-Straße
Monument
Finish on the broad pedestrian street, looking back towards the mountains above the Annasäule. In Advent, stalls and lights make this a good place to linger after dusk.
Day 2 — Nordkette
Day 2 — Nordkette
Congress Cable Railway Station
Train Station
Start the mountain day on the Hungerburg funicular. Use your clearest morning for Nordkette; the city museums make a better choice when cloud hides the peaks.
Hungerburg
Station, Transport
Change here from the funicular to the cable car. The viewing terrace already gives you a fine city view, so take a short look before continuing uphill.
Seegrube
Station, Transport
Ride up for the snowy mountain panorama and lunch above the city. You can enjoy the terraces without skiing; this route does not depend on a winter hiking trail or a summit climb.
Alpenzoo Innsbruck
Zoo
Stop at the zoo on the way down the funicular. It focuses on Alpine animals, including ibex and lynx; its hillside paths make this a proper outdoor visit rather than a quick indoor stop.
Hofgarten
Park
Back in town, take a short circuit of the imperial garden beside Congress. It is a gentle finish after the mountain outing, with the old town close by for dinner.
Day 3 — Ambras & Bergisel
Day 3 — Ambras & Bergisel
Schloss Ambras Innsbruck
Castle
Make the castle’s armour collections, Cabinet of Curiosities and Spanish Hall the morning’s main visit. Ambras closes throughout November, so this four-day route works best from December onwards.
Bergisel Schanze
Sports Centre, Sports Entertainment
The ski-jump tower is worth visiting even if you have no interest in skiing. Head up for the view over Innsbruck and its mountain ring; the stadium is also striking from below.
Tirol Panorama
Museum
The huge circular painting places you inside the 1809 Battle of Bergisel. Visit alongside the nearby ski jump rather than making a separate journey across town.
Tiroler Kaiserjägermuseum
Museum, Museum Gallery
This military-history museum is paired with the Tirol Panorama. Continue here if the history interests you; otherwise spend the extra time at Bergisel and Wilten.
Stift Wilten
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Walk down towards Wilten for the abbey church, distinct from the basilica opposite. Its richly decorated interior rounds off the Bergisel afternoon without another cross-city journey.
Day 4 — Wilten & city museums
Day 4 — Wilten & city museums
Triumphal Arch
Monument
Begin at the southern end of Maria-Theresien-Straße. The arch’s two sides commemorate a royal wedding and a death in the imperial family; it is a short street-side stop.
Wilten Basilica
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Visit the pale-yellow basilica for its elaborate Rococo interior. This is a worthwhile return to Wilten for church architecture; otherwise give the extra morning time to the museums.
Markthalle Innsbruck
Food And Beverage Store, Grocery Store
Come for lunch ingredients, regional produce and a simple bite by the river. The market is most useful earlier in the day and is closed on Sundays.
Tyrolean Folk Art Museum
Museum, Art Museum
Carved wooden rooms, traditional dress and everyday objects give a different view of Tyrol from the imperial palaces. This is the main museum choice for the fourth day.
Zeughaus
Museum, Museum Gallery
The former armoury now tells the story of Tyrol through its people, landscape and trade. It sits east of the old town and gives museum lovers a substantial extra afternoon visit.
Optional extras
Optional extras
Swarovski Kristallwelten
Museum
A half-day alternative in Wattens, with artist-designed crystal chambers and outdoor installations. The dedicated shuttle from Innsbruck makes this possible without a car; choose it in place of a city museum afternoon.
Münze Hall
Museum, Museum Gallery
Pair the mint museum at Burg Hasegg with a wander through Hall’s medieval centre. This is a separate half-day outing east of Innsbruck, particularly good for anyone interested in coins and local history.
Pfarrkirche St. Nikolaus
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Add this church while exploring Hall in Tirol, close to the town’s main square. Its unusual angled layout and painted interior reward a brief visit alongside the mint museum.
