Maastricht in 2 Days: Old Town, City Walls and Caves

Destination: Maastricht, The NetherlandsCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 9th October 2026
Maastricht pairs a compact old centre with a very different outing underground. Walk its squares and surviving walls on the first day, then explore the caves and hills south of the city on the second.

Image of Vrijthof

Vrijthof

Public Plaza
Begin in the broad square beside Maastricht’s two best-known churches. Walk around its edges for the different views before visiting Saint Servatius and heading into the older streets.

Sint-Servaasbasiliek

Place of Worship, History Landmark
The Basilica of Saint Servatius is the main church visit of the morning. Its architecture and treasury explain Maastricht’s long role as a religious centre, beyond the café terraces outside.

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebasiliek

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Walk southeast through the old centre to the Basilica of Our Lady. Its dark interior and chapel offer a different atmosphere from Saint Servatius; the adjoining square is a natural place for a break.

Helpoort

Monument
The medieval gate marks the transition from the old streets to the surviving walls and park. Follow the walls from here rather than treating the gate as an isolated photo stop.

Stadspark

Park
Finish the first day with the park paths beside the old fortifications and the Jeker. The walk links naturally with Helpoort and gives you a longer outdoor stretch after the church interiors.

Day 2 — Caves & Sint-Pietersberg

Day 2 — Caves & Sint-Pietersberg
Image of Fort Sint Pieter

Fort Sint Pieter

Historic Site
Start the southern outing at the fort above Maastricht. A guided fort tour explains the city’s defences; it is a separate visit from the cave tour later in the day.

Sint Pietersberg

National Park
Follow the hill paths south from the fort through the limestone landscape. This is the walking part of the day, connecting the city’s edge with the Zonneberg cave area and the woodland beyond.
Image of Grotten Zonneberg

Grotten Zonneberg

Park
Join a guided tour of the former limestone workings from the Zonneberg entrance near Slavante. Reserve a tour in your preferred language and arrange the hill walk around it; this is not an independently explored cave.

ENCI-bos

Locality, Core Attraction
Continue into the woodland near the former ENCI quarry if you want a longer outdoor afternoon. It extends the Sint Pietersberg outing; turn back after the cave tour if you prefer a shorter day.

Bonnefanten museum

Museum, Modern Art Museum
The Bonnefanten is the main alternative for an art-focused afternoon, across the Meuse from the old centre. Its old-master and contemporary collections can replace the hill outing if you would rather stay indoors.

Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht

Museum
A useful companion to the limestone landscape, with regional geology and fossils. Visit as an alternative to part of the first-day church circuit, or on a wet afternoon instead of the longer hill walk.

Boekhandel Dominicanen

Books, Shop Retail
Step inside the former Dominican church, now a bookshop, for the contrast between Gothic architecture and shelves of books. It is a short central detour near Vrijthof, easily added without reshaping the day.
