Base yourself in Bolzano for Christmas stalls beneath the mountains, Ötzi’s museum and a day in Merano. This three-day route suits travellers who want South Tyrolean towns and winter scenery without a ski holiday.

Day 1 — Bolzano old town
Day 1 — Bolzano old town
Bolzano
Piazza Walther
Public Plaza
Bolzano’s main Christmas market runs from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with an opening evening on 26 November. Start here for the square and cathedral, then return after dark for the stalls and lights.
Our Lady of the Assumption
Place of Worship, History Landmark
Bolzano Cathedral stands beside the market. Look up at the patterned roof and carved bell tower before stepping inside; it makes a short stop between the square and the old-town streets.
South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology
Museum, Museum Gallery
Ötzi, the prehistoric man found in the Alps, is the reason to visit. Make this the main indoor visit of the day; the exhibits explain his clothing, equipment and the research behind his story.
Piazza delle Erbe - Obstplatz
Marketplace, Market Shopping
The fruit-market square leads into Via dei Portici, Bolzano’s arcaded shopping street. Follow the covered walkways for independent shops and a lunch break before returning towards Piazza Walther.
Chiesa dei Domenicani - Dominikanerkirche
Place of Worship, History Landmark
The Dominican Church’s small St John Chapel contains medieval frescoes. It is close to Piazza Walther, so fit this quieter art stop into the old-town walk rather than making a separate journey.
Day 2 — Renon, with Bolzano alternatives
Day 2 — Renon, with Bolzano alternatives
Bolzano
Castel Roncolo
Castle
A Bolzano alternative to the Renon excursion: this castle is known for frescoes of medieval courtly life. Pair it with Museion if you stay in town. It closes on Mondays and on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
Museion
Museum, Contemporary Art Museum
Choose this contemporary-art museum with Castel Roncolo instead of the mountain day. The exhibitions are the main draw; the glass-fronted building and footbridges also make a short riverside stop.
Funivia del Renon - Rittner Seilbahn
Station, Transport
For the mountain route, start at the Renon cable-car station in Bolzano and ride to Soprabolzano. Continue on the plateau railway to Collalbo, then return the same way; there is no need to hire a car.
Oberbozen - Soprabolzano
Village, Core Attraction
The Renon Christmas stalls gather beside the station. In 2026 the festival runs on Fridays and weekends from 27 November to 3 January 2027, with Friday stalls opening in the afternoon. Put this day on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Rittner Bahn
Historic Site
The narrow-gauge railway links Soprabolzano with Collalbo across the plateau. The journey is part of the outing: take a window seat for the mountain views and use the same line for the return to the cable car.
Klobenstein - Collalbo
Village, Core Attraction
Walk from the railway station into Collalbo for the second Renon Christmas-market location. Have lunch here before the return journey, with the surrounding mountain views as the main reason to linger.
Day 3 — Merano
Day 3 — Merano
Merano
Promenade Tappeiner
Recreational Trail Or Path, Hiking Trail
Start the Merano day with the elevated Tappeiner walk while it is light, then descend into the old town. Its views take in the town’s roofs and surrounding slopes; Palais Mamming is the indoor alternative if the path is icy.
Kurhaus
Building, Core Attraction
Merano’s grand riverside hall faces the Christmas stalls on the Passer promenade. Take the train from Bolzano for this day, walk into the centre and return to the riverside market after the hilltop walk.
Palais Mamming Museum
Museum
Merano’s town museum is beside St Nicholas Church. Visit the church square and walk west through Via dei Portici’s arcades afterwards, ending at the riverside market. The museum is an indoor alternative to the Tappeiner walk and closes on Mondays.

Bolzano
Chiesa dei Francescani - Franziskanerkirche
Place of Worship, History Landmark
The Franciscan Church and cloister make a quiet addition to the Bolzano old-town walk. Visit for the Gothic interior and carved wooden altar if you have room between the museum and the evening market.
Naturmuseum Südtirol - Museo di Scienze Naturali Alto Adige
Museum
The South Tyrol Museum of Nature explains the region’s landscapes and wildlife. It is a useful family alternative to contemporary art, or an extra indoor visit on a longer stay in Bolzano.
