Lincoln is a compact weekend for medieval history, with a cathedral and castle above streets of small shops. Spend one day on the hilltop sights and another following the old town down to Brayford waterfront.

Day 1 — Cathedral Quarter
Day 1 — Cathedral Quarter
Lincoln Cathedral
Historic Site
Begin on the hilltop with the cathedral’s vast nave, carved stonework and views across the Close. This is one of the two main visits of the day, alongside the castle.
Lincoln Castle
Castle
Walk the walls for views of the cathedral, then explore the prison and Magna Carta displays. The grounds and the ticketed attractions offer different lengths of visit.
Lincoln Medieval Bishops' Palace
Historic Site
Explore the ruined palace below the cathedral for a quieter view of medieval Lincoln. If the cathedral and castle fill your day, this is the easiest main-route stop to leave for another visit.
Steep Hill
Historic Site
Follow the cobbled street downhill through independent shops and tearooms. Its name is literal; walking this direction makes a gentler finish to the hilltop sights.
Jew's House
Building, History Landmark
Look at the surviving medieval stone façade on the way down Steep Hill. This is an exterior architectural stop, rather than a recommendation to dine in the restaurant inside.
Day 2 — Old Town & Waterfront
Day 2 — Old Town & Waterfront
Lincoln Museum
Museum, History Museum
Start the lower-town day with Lincolnshire archaeology, from early settlements to the Roman city. The neighbouring Usher Gallery makes the next stop an easy walk.
Usher Gallery
Art Gallery
Choose this for paintings, decorative art and the collection assembled by Lincoln jeweller James Ward Usher. Pair it with the museum, or spend longer in whichever collection interests you more.
High Bridge
Historic Site
The old buildings spanning the River Witham make this a distinctive High Street stop. Follow the river west to Brayford Pool for a waterfront walk before returning through the centre.
Arboretum
Park, Park Nature
Finish with a park walk east of the centre, among the formal gardens and mature trees. Choose it for a quieter afternoon after the museum and gallery.

Ellis Mill
Historic Site
An exterior detour for the surviving windmill west of the castle. Pair it with the nearby Museum of Lincolnshire Life instead of adding a separate journey across town.
Newport Arch
Historic Site
Walk north from the cathedral to see the surviving Roman gateway. This is a brief outdoor addition to the upper-town day, not another long museum visit.
Museum of Lincolnshire Life
Museum, Community Museum
Swap this in for local social and industrial history, including transport and machinery. It fits naturally with Ellis Mill and the northern side of the cathedral quarter.
