Day 1 — Old Town

Day 1 — Old Town
Image of Kapellbrücke

Kapellbrücke

Attraction, Core Attraction
Cross Chapel Bridge and look at the painted panels under its roof. Continue along the Reuss towards the Jesuit Church before exploring the old town on the opposite bank.

Altstadt Luzern

Historic District, City
Follow the painted façades around Weinmarkt and Hirschenplatz rather than staying on the riverfront. This is the best part of the route for a leisurely lunch and browsing small shops.

Musegg Wall

Historic Site
See the medieval wall from the streets and paths below. The towers and wall-top walk close after 1 November for winter, so this stop is an exterior walk, not a climb.
Image of Lion Monument

Lion Monument

Monument, Sculpture
The carved lion sits in a small rock garden north of the old town. Pair this short stop with the neighbouring Bourbaki Panorama; the Glacier Garden is another nearby option on day four.

Bourbaki Panorama

Museum, Museum Gallery
The circular painting shows the French army entering Switzerland in the winter of 1871. It adds a substantial indoor visit after the Lion Monument and works particularly well on a cold afternoon.

Jesuitenkirche

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Step inside the Jesuit Church for its white and pink Baroque interior. It sits beside the Reuss, so visit just after Chapel Bridge rather than retracing your route at the end of the day.

Day 2 — Lakefront and Museums

Day 2 — Lakefront and Museums

Swiss Museum of Transport

Museum
Make the transport museum the main visit today: trains, aircraft and hands-on exhibits can fill much of the day. Walk out along the lake via the Hofkirche and promenade, then take a bus back if you stay until closing.
Image of Schloss Meggenhorn

Schloss Meggenhorn

Historic Site
An optional extension east of the transport museum for lake views from the grounds. The castle museum closes in winter, but its winter café opens Friday–Sunday from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027.

St. Leodegar im Hof (Hofkirche)

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Start the lakefront walk at this twin-towered church above the shore. Visit the interior, then head down to the promenade towards the transport museum.

Luzerner Seepromenade

Park
Follow the lakeside path from the centre towards the transport museum. The open water and mountain skyline are the attraction; this is a walk between visits rather than another paid stop.

Day 3 — Mount Rigi

Day 3 — Mount Rigi
Image of Rigi Kulm

Rigi Kulm

Train Station
Use your clearest day for Rigi. Take the train from Lucerne to Arth-Goldau, then the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm; the mountain train takes just under an hour. The summit visit needs no skiing, and returning the same way is straightforward.
Image of Weggis

Weggis

Village, Core Attraction
If you descend Rigi to Vitznau, continue by bus to Weggis for a short lakeside walk, then return to Lucerne via Küssnacht. This is an optional village stop, not essential to the mountain day.
Image of Vitznau

Vitznau

Historic Site
An alternative descent from Rigi Kulm: the cogwheel train reaches Vitznau in about 30 minutes. A lake boat makes a scenic return to Lucerne when its winter sailing fits; otherwise continue by bus and rail.

Day 4 — Art and riverside

Rosengart Collection

Museum, Museum Gallery
Spend the morning with Picasso and Paul Klee in this compact museum close to the station. It is an easy indoor anchor for the final day, with lunch in the centre afterwards.

KKL Luzern

Music Venue
Walk around the concert hall’s lake-facing exterior beside the station. For an evening here, choose a performance and book a ticket; the building itself is a short architectural stop.
Image of Spreuerbrücke

Spreuerbrücke

Bridge, History Landmark
Cross this covered bridge near the western end of the old town and look up at its Dance of Death paintings. Continue along the river to Museum Luzern if you prefer local history to another art visit.
Image of Glacier garden

Glacier garden

Museum
Choose the Glacier Garden for glacial potholes, the rock interior and mirror maze. It is beside the Lion Monument, so you can swap it with the Bourbaki visit on day one or use it for a fuller final afternoon.

Museum Luzern

Museum, History Museum
A local-history and natural-history alternative beside the Reuss. Use it instead of one of the other museums if those collections appeal more, or as a city day if the mountains are hidden in cloud.
