Tromsø: 4 Days in the Arctic

Destination: Tromsø, NorwayCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 28th September 2026
Base yourself in central Tromsø for four days, with time for the city, the cable car, Sommarøy and a northern lights tour. The centre is easy to explore on foot, with buses and organised transfers for the longer trips.

Day 1 — Harbour and aurora

Day 1 — Harbour and aurora

Skansen

Monument
Begin among the old customs buildings at Skansen, a small pocket of waterfront history beside the Polar Museum. Give it 15–20 minutes: this is a quiet outdoor wander, with wooden buildings and views across the sound, rather than a lengthy attraction. Then step into the museum to warm up.

The Polar Museum

Museum
Start beside the old harbour, where the Polar Museum tells the stories of Arctic expeditions and the people who lived by trapping and the sea. Allow around 90 minutes, then leave time for lunch and a waterfront wander. Keep this first day gentle if you are heading out on a late northern-lights chase.

Stortorget

Square, Core Attraction
From the Polar Museum, follow the waterfront south to Tromsø’s main square. Look for the fishermen’s memorial and the little Rocket Kiosk above the square, then take a short turn along Storgata’s shopfronts. This is a 20-minute stretch of the walk, with lunch close by at Smørtorget.

Smørtorget

Cafe
Make lunch a proper warm-up at this café and second-hand shop. Order something from the day’s lunch menu, then browse the vintage pieces over coffee. Allow 45–60 minutes before wandering on towards Prostneset. It is a useful unhurried pause before a long evening outdoors.

Prostneset Harbour Terminal

Ferry Terminal, Transport
Walk south along the waterfront to Prostneset, then have an early dinner before your northern-lights outing. The linked bus tour leaves from outside the Radisson Blu, not this terminal: follow the meeting instructions on your booking. Allow roughly six hours and dress for standing outdoors. Go early in your stay so another evening remains possible if clouds win; sightings are never certain.

Day 2 — Arctic Cathedral and Fjellheisen

Day 2 — Arctic Cathedral and Fjellheisen

Kaffebønna

Cafe
Start slowly with coffee and a cinnamon bun or something more substantial from the bakery counter. After a late aurora chase, there is no prize for being first out of the hotel. Allow half an hour here, then take the bus across to the Arctic Cathedral; move the cable-car visit to whichever day has the clearest view.

Arctic Cathedral

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Take a city bus across the bridge to Tromsdalen kirke, better known as the Arctic Cathedral. Its sharp white roof is striking against the winter hills; step inside for the stained glass if visiting hours allow. This is a working church, so check services before coming. Pair it with Fjellheisen nearby, and save your walking for sheltered streets if the bridge is windy or icy.

Fjellheisen

Historic Site
Choose the clearest part of your stay for the cable-car view over Tromsø and its surrounding mountains. After the Arctic Cathedral, continue by local bus or taxi and buy a return cable-car ticket. The linked package includes transport from central Tromsø instead: use it as an alternative, checking its departure and return times before arranging the cathedral visit. Check wind closures on the day; no mountain hike is needed.

Ølhallen

Bar, Pub
Back on the island, settle into Tromsø’s oldest pub for an optional early-evening drink. A small tasting board is a good way to try Norwegian beers without turning the evening into a marathon. This is a pub stop rather than dinner; skip it if you are using tonight for a second northern-lights outing.

Day 3 — Fjord escape

Day 3 — Fjord escape
Image of Sommarøy

Sommarøy

Beach
Leave today for the coast: Sommarøy’s pale beaches and low islands make a lovely contrast to the city. Join the linked road excursion from Tromsø, choosing the coach or small-group option to suit you. This pin marks the destination; follow your booking for the city pickup and return time. Bring warm layers for the photo stops, then leave a generous buffer before dinner back in town.

Mathallen

Restaurant, Restaurant
Make this the dinner you linger over after the fjord trip. Mathallen’s kitchen works with northern Norwegian ingredients; choose from the current à la carte menu or settle in for a tasting menu if you want a longer evening. Reserve directly and leave a generous gap after your tour’s scheduled return. This is the splurge meal, not a food-hall pit stop.

Day 4 — Polaria and art

Day 4 — Polaria and art
Image of Polaria

Polaria

Aquarium
A warm indoor start after a late night: Polaria introduces the Arctic through its aquarium and exhibitions. Allow about 90 minutes and check the day’s programme on arrival rather than planning around an assumed feeding time. Book admission if it suits your schedule; if you have an early flight, choose this or the art museum instead of squeezing in both.

Northern Norwegian Art Museum

Museum, Art Museum
Finish with a different view of the north at Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, a short walk back towards the centre from Polaria. Let the current exhibitions decide the length of your visit; an hour is a useful starting point. Check opening days, and leave this as an optional final stop if your airport transfer is earlier.

Tromsø Cathedral

Place of Worship, History Landmark
Finish with the wooden cathedral in the city centre, a short stroll from the art museum. Built in 1861, it offers a quieter contrast to the angular Arctic Cathedral across the water. Allow 15–20 minutes for the exterior and surrounding streets; go inside only when open to visitors. On an early departure day, make this your brief final walk and leave the art museum for another visit.
