Dubrovnik Long Weekend: Walls, Island Walks and Sea Views

Destination: Dubrovnik, CroatiaCreated by: Moo_The_TrotterLast updated: 4th October 2026
Dubrovnik suits a warm-weather long weekend of stone streets, sea views and swimming breaks. These three days pair the old town and city walls with Lokrum and the coast, keeping the big viewpoints separate from slower afternoons.

Day 1 — City Walls & Old Town

Day 1 — City Walls & Old Town
Image of Pile Gate

Pile Gate

City Gate, Landmark
Enter through the western gate and start the walls circuit nearby. The old town is easiest to explore on foot; the gate is a useful meeting point for this first morning.

Building, Core Attraction
Pause at the large carved fountain just inside Pile Gate. From here, walk the length of Stradun towards Luža Square and the harbour, using the side lanes for lunch.

Make the full walls circuit the morning’s main activity: it is roughly 2 km with plenty of steps and exposed stretches. Start early on warm days, then spend the afternoon in the streets below.

Franjevački Samostan & Muzej (Franciscan Monastery & Museum)

Museum
The cloister and old pharmacy add a quieter stop beside Stradun. Choose this or a longer visit inside the Rector’s Palace if you would rather keep the afternoon mostly outdoors.

The courtyard and rooms explain Dubrovnik’s former republic and its government. This is the afternoon’s main museum option, close to the cathedral and old harbour.

Dubrovnik Cathedral

Cathedral, Church, Historic Site
Finish the old town loop at the baroque cathedral, a short walk from the palace. The treasury is a separate paid visit; the nearby harbour is a good place to sit before dinner.

Day 2 — Lokrum & Banje

Day 2 — Lokrum & Banje
Image of Fort Royal

Fort Royal

Castle, History Landmark
Take the official Lokrum boat from the old town harbour; its ticket includes island entry and the return journey. Walk uphill to Fort Royal for the view, then spend the rest of the morning on the island paths.

Botanical Garden

Garden, Park Nature
Follow Lokrum’s paths down from the fort into the botanical garden and monastery area. Make this an island half-day rather than a quick photo stop, returning to Dubrovnik before the beach afternoon.

Banje Beach

Beach
After returning from Lokrum, walk east from the old harbour to Banje for a swim and a view back to the walls. The beach is pebbly; outside swimming season, make this a short coastal walk.

Day 3 — Lovrijenac, Srđ & Lapad

Day 3 — Lovrijenac, Srđ & Lapad

Fort Lovrijenac

Monument
Begin the third day at the fort outside the western walls. The stairs lead to sea views and a different angle on the city; the city walls ticket also includes this fort, so keep it from Day 1.
Image of Srđ

Srđ

Peak, Park Nature
Take the cable car from its station above the old town to the ridge for the broad view over Dubrovnik and the islands. Return to town for lunch before travelling across to Lapad.

Lapad Bay Beach

Beach
Take a city bus or taxi to Lapad for the afternoon. Walk the bay promenade and settle by the water; this is the slower end to the trip, away from the old town’s busiest streets.

Optional Dubrovnik Alternatives

Optional Dubrovnik Alternatives

Sponza palace

Museum, Museum Gallery
Add the palace courtyard and the memorial room beside Luža Square to your old town walk. It is an alternative short cultural stop, rather than another half-day museum.

Fort Bokar

Monument
View the sea-facing fort from the city walls circuit or the shoreline below Lovrijenac. Use this card as an extra viewpoint stop; it does not need another separate admission or itinerary day.
