Start Saturday with the Roman bathing complex: the Great Bath, temple remains and museum explain why this city grew around its springs. Book a morning ticket and spend around two hours here. Bath Spa station is about a ten-minute walk away.

The Abbey stands beside the Roman Baths, so go straight across the square after your visit. Inside, look up at the fan-vaulted ceiling; the tower tour is a separate ticket for views over the city.
